Finally, it’s time for you to buy a new futon mattress. Perhaps your current mattress has begun to deteriorate, developing lumps or the seams are coming apart. Or, you’ve decided to start using your futon more and need a more comfortable mattress to sit and sleep on. Irrespective of the reason, it’s imperative to make a right choice of your new futon mattress. You can start looking for cheap mattresses right away. For, if you fail in doing so, even the new mattress may not come up to your expectations and you may not sleep as comfortably.
The first thing you need to consider is the size of the mattress. Too small a size fails to deliver the required level of a comfortable good night’s sleep nor can it be effective when used on a couch. You get a futon mattress in just three sizes. The three sizes are: twin, full or queen. A twin size mattress is best reserved for children or teenagers due to their small size. A full size mattress is the bare minimum you should have for a futon that will be sleeping a couple. The largest mattress size is the queen size that has room enough for two people to sleep comfortably.
There is none denying the fact that it is the filling that governs the comfort level of a mattress. A cotton mattress is cheap but will quickly develop lumps and bumps. You will need to rotate this type of mattress often to even out the lumps – perhaps every time you use it. A foam mattress is the next level up and can be quite comfortable if you are willing to spend the money. Inner spring futon mattresses offer another choice for a bed mattress. These are perhaps the most comfortable and therefore the costliest too.
The third and the last, but a very important feature, that governs the comfort level of a futon is the thickness of the mattress. In case you intend using it for an extra bed, not as a luxury mattress, a thickness of six inches suffices. On the contrary if the futon is going to be used recurrently, like a regular full time bed, a mattress that is eight to nine inches thick would be needed. But, mind you, a thick mattress being heavier, may pose problems of maneuverability while you may want to shift the futon from a bed to a couch.
