We are again looking forward to the summer it seems to have come around so fast. Being woken up in the mornings is no longer a hassle you hear the birds churning outside to the beautiful sound of a sunny morning. But a lot of folk have decided to forget about the terrible winter that Britain suffered this winter which saw many elderly people unfortunately pass away.
Almost 30,000 people died this winter due to low temperatures; do not get me wrong the UK is not the coldest country. In fact coldest city in the globe, Yakutsk in east Siberia, has no exceeded winter deaths, even though temperatures there can drop to minus 49C. It is simply because our bodies have become so used to living at ease in the UK.
Our bodies have learnt to rely on homes heated to the maximum. But when you eventually people an elderly person it takes a lot more effort in keeping your boiler in great shape. So what happens is that these elderly people go to bed and leave the heating switched off, by the time they awake their bodies are frozen and their organs just cannot handle the cold because they are elderly so they begin to get sick and this is where death occurs.
The deaths are not caused by pure hyperthermia but instead are due to strokes and heart attacks being brought on by the drop in temperature over night. So have a lovely summer but if you are elderly then remember that before the summer comes to an end you should sort out your heating oil or get a family member to help you out if you are having trouble. But just do not leave it until its too late, other wise you could end up regretting it.
