If the motor says OHV on it,then its an overhead valve engine.They are notorious for back firing when you cut them off.If you throttle it all the way down before shutting it off it will help.Most mowers also have a safety switch under the seat.If your setting on it when you shut it off this may cause it as well.Try parking it with the brake locked and throttle it all the way down then shut it off.
