Question: Do I pay Sales Tax if Lowes or Home Depot are remodeling my kitchen and bathroom?
If I am purchasing all the material for the remodel from them (cabinets, tile, sinks etc) and they are installing everything, do I have to pay sales tax on those products? What about the labor, is that taxed? I am confused about “capital improvement”.

P.S. I live in New York

Answer:

Answer by the tax lady
If you buy it, you pay sales tax.
If they buy it, they pay the sales tax and add it to the amount you pay them.

The fact that it’s a capital improvement doesn’t change this. (The sales tax is added to your basis.)

If a business or home owner is looking to replace their roof, there are many choices of roofing materials available that the individual can select. Some of those choices include asphalt shingles, cement tile or metal roofing panels.

In fact, within each of these material categories there are additional choices. For example, if the owner decides to go with a metal roof they can additionally select corrugated metal roofing panels.

Therefore, as with any purchase it is important to conduct research on the product. Subsequently, if thinking about corrugated metal roofing panels it is important to know what are corrugated roofing panels and the advantages of selecting this product.

What Are Corrugated Metal Roofing Panels?

First of all before discussing corrugated metal roofing panels, it is important to know what the metal roofing panels are comprised of. Metal roofing panels are long sheets of metal that can be used as part of a roofing project. Generally the roofing panels are made from a blend of other metals. Those metals could include zinc, copper and aluminum. Once these metals have been combined together to form the roofing panels they are then coated with 26 gauge steel.

However, corrugated metal roofing panels are manufactured a little differently. This type of roofing panel is made from a metal known as mild steel. Mild steel is not an iron galvanized product, but steel that is defined as low carbon steel. This type of steel is not rock hard like typical steel, but because of the low carbon it is more pliable or can be used in welding projects.

In addition, corrugation is the crimping or folding of the metal roofing panel. This process makes the corrugated metal roofing panels more durable and strong and yet maintains some flexibility.

Advantages

When an individual decides upon installing metal roofing panels, there are number of associated advantages. One of the primary advantages has to deal with the individual’s finances.

Specifically, the installation of corrugated metal roofing will provide the building owner a substantial number of years in which they will not have to worry about replacing their roof. This is because, typically, corrugated metal roofing panels will meet the roofing needs of the building for up to 30 years.

In addition, another advantage to not only the owner, but globally is that the product places less strain on the environment. This is because of its durability and therefore decreasing the drain on the Earth’s resources. In addition, corrugated metal roof panels are made from recycled products. Typically, 30 percent of the materials used to manufacture corrugated metal roof panels are from previously used materials.

If a person needs a licensed plumber, there are several options that he might try to find a county licensed plumber. It is important to have a list of plumbers available before a plumbing emergency occurs so that it reduces the panic and allows the person to get several quotes before deciding on one plumber to do the job. Plumbers are licensed by each state, so there are usually websites set up so that a user can find a licensed plumber by county.

Plumbing Licenses

In order to work in any state, a plumber must be licensed. County licensed plumbers means that the state license records are made more searchable by organizing them by the county in which the plumber works. The only exception to a plumber needing a license to work is when a plumber is an apprentice, officially applied for and accepted, to work under a licensed plumber in order to complete the training for the job.

County licensed plumbers must have at least two years of experience as well as have completed the plumbing course work in order to be eligible to take the limited Tradesman licensing exam. This exam allows the Tradesman plumber to practice plumbing without supervision on a limited basis usually with simple jobs and not overseeing other workers. After two more years (four thousand more hours) the plumber is eligible for an even higher exam, that of a Journeyman plumber. A Journeyman license allows a plumber to have minor oversight of other workers, draw up limited plumbing system plans, and do more complex work.

The highest license for a county licensed plumber is that of a Master plumber, which requires a Journeyman plumber to spend one more year under the supervision of a Master plumber in order to be eligible for the exam. This exam requires the plumber to draw up the plans for a multi-story building’s plumbing system in addition to the other exam work. With this license, the Master plumber can oversee less qualified workers as well as work in almost any plumbing situation that is out there.

When a person is trying to find a county licensed plumber, the best place to look is online for sites that list licensed plumbers by county or city. From there, it is good to look at each plumbing company’s website to see if they list the qualifications of their plumbers. Some sites list what the lowest licensing is that they require, which can help a person decide what company to go with in regards to experience. For minor work, a Tradesman plumber would usually be fine, but for larger jobs with planning or a complex problem, Journeyman or Master plumbers are a must.

If considering a new roof for one’s home there are a number of options available. Some of those options include the use of traditional asphalt shingles, concrete tile and metal roofing. Each of these types of roof have their own unique advantages as well as specific costs associated with their use.

For example if considering the use of metal roofing panels it is important to know about this type of roofing product, benefits associated with this choice and how the roofing panels are applied.

About Metal Roofing Panels

The use of metal roofing panels are a practical, earth friendly and economical way of roofing a business or residence. Typically, metal roofing panels are a combination of different metals. Those metals include aluminum, copper and zinc. Additionally, the blended metals are covered with 26 gauge steel.

This combination of metals makes for a light weight roofing product that generally weighs around one pound per square foot. In addition, the cost of metal roofing panels can range from .50 to $6.00 per square foot.

Benefits

There are many advantages associated with the use of metal roofing panels. Some of those advantages for the consumer are financial as well as time saving. This is because when an individual uses metal roofing panels as a roof covering they can anticipate that covering to last at least 30 years. This product longevity along with minimal maintenance can be a tremendous cost savings for the individual or business.

One other associated advantage when an individual installs metal roofing panels are the energy savings that the individual will experience. This also, in turn, represents a cost savings.

How Metal Roofing Panels Are Applied

Metal roofing panels are generally manufactured in long panels. These panels are then attached to the plywood that overlays the roofing frame. Generally, between the metal roofing panels and the plywood is a layer of felt. This felt helps to absorb the pelting sound of the rain on the metal roofing panels. Additionally, as part of the construction process, there is added insulation that is installed. This added insulation is installed between the plywood on the roof and the installed dry wall.

Also, the roofing panels made of metal may be corrugated. These corrugated metal roofing panels are usually made of galvanized iron. Corrugated simply means that the metal is pressed together to give the appearance of being folded. This process strengthens the product to make it more durable.

Online courses are valuable assets for the class work part of the training, since it gives the student flexibility to work in the field and gain those apprenticeship hours, while still moving forward with the class work required to complete the training.

The level of training depends on the level that the plumber wants to achieve. Every plumber has to start as an apprentice. In order to apply for a Tradesman license, which is granted through each state according to their rules and regulations, an apprentice must have completed the course work and also a minimum of four thousand hours working under a Master plumber in the field. All hours have to be verified according to the requirements of the state. That means that an apprentice plumber must have worked full time for one hundred weeks, or almost two years before being able to take the exam for the Tradesman license.

Certain plumber jobs require an even higher level of training, such as a Journeyman or Master plumber. In order to take the exam for Journeyman licensing, the plumber has to have completed at least eight thousand hours under a Master plumber, which is nearing four years of working in the field before being ready for that kind of licensing. Master plumbing licenses require a plumber to have worked in the field for one year as a Journeyman before being allowed to take the exam.

In the apprenticeship, plumbers learn all that they need for plumbing jobs that they will experience in the field when they are licensed. They learn how to handle and cut pipes, tubing, and fittings. They make calculations so that the right amounts of materials are used. They read building plans and wiring plans so that the jobs can be done safely and effectively. They learn to trouble shoot and work with dish washers, washers, toilets and other plumbing appliances. In addition, they learn customer service and also how to direct less experienced workers.
