Ok, I’m a little scared right now. I totally didn’t listen to my parents but I always had an old brown extension cord plugged in. And the plastic piece that you handle the plug with to plug it in and pull it out, it totally melted off. I’m scared just by the thought that I could have set the house on fire. I think it happened over the winter when I had to use an eletric heater which I plugged into the extension cord (bad move) I’m totally stupid, I know. But I seriously don’t want to tell my parents. Nothing is plugged in it now. Am I able to just pull it by the cord? Could it possibly give a shock? What should I do? I want it out of my outlet like ASAP! Just so you know, it was just plastic part that melted off. I’ve been using this plug for months now with a lamp so it still works. It’s not damaged or anything. But is it safe to just pull it out? The melted part is actually off. That’s how melted it was I got it out! I was seriously nervous to pull it out. haha It kind of wasn’t in all the way either. woops
Answer:
You should be able to pull out the plug with the cord. Just hold the cord about 10 inches away from the plug. If it won’t come out you will have to turn off the fuse so the power is off to that room and remove the cord by yanking on the melted part. The reason it melted is the cords rating is for a lamp not for use with a heater. Plug the heater directly into the wall, or ask your parents to buy you a proper cord.
