When I was in junior high in wood class, we would use this seal that would make the wood shinny and water proof. What is that called? Also, what wood seal would be the most durable for the outdoors? I’m gorilla gluing 2 woods together. Should I do this after or before I put the seal on? The thing that I’m making is a training dummy to train my dog for protection. So I need it to be really tough and durable.

Answer:
Spar urethane varnish is the stuff they use on all exposed wood surfaces on boats. It’s good to use on any wood that will be outside. It’s very thick and it comes in two finishes: gloss and satin. You can get a can of it at the paint department of any home improvement store. I would glue the woods together first. Then the varnish will seal the gap between the woods.

Does any one have a good source of where I can get info on setting up a rain barrel system for my garden and plants? Site’s or groups or pdf’s, etc. Thanks

Answer:
If you want to set a ready-made rain barrel kit, there’s a big selection at: http://www.gardeners.com/Rain-Barrels/Watering_RainBarrels,default,sc.html?SC=XNET8019 . You’ll find lots of barrels, cisterns and tanks at: http://www.simplyrainbarrels.com/?gclid=CPeWkdKKqZsCFdZM5QodnwLWCg . If you want to build a basic rainbarrel, look at: http://www.diylife.com/2007/08/08/conserve-water-and-save-money-by-building-your-own-rain-barrel/ But if you want a real project with spectacular results, look at : http://www.emmitsburg.net/gardens/articles/adams/audrey/water_barrel.htm For more references, Google “build your own rain barrel system”. The one I put together was nowhere near as elaborate as the one at the Emmetsburg site. I set up a line of barrels at a downspout and arranged them so when one got filled, it overflowed into the next one. Mine were on a downward slope, so I could set up as many barrels as I could afford, until I ran out of hill. Without the hill I would have to have arranged the barrels on blocks of varying height. To get good overflow from one barrel to another, I used plastic barrels with edges that stuck out about an inch, so the water wouldn’t just run down the side of the full one. I also used some steel barrels, to which I clipped a piece of plastic or tightly woven fabric, which I draped into the lower barrel receiving the water. Pieces of rope lying over the edge help, too – they help lead the water, like pouring liquid from a full jar against the back of a spoon to fill a glass. One other thing you have to do is tilt each barrel so it will pour out at one spot on the rim – the spot under which you place the next barrel. For a while I used joint compound buckets to scoop out the water and carry it to the gardens, but I got tired of that in a hurry. I then bought a little submersible pump for getting the water where I wanted it. If you have any appreciable hills, you’ll have to get a pump capable of handling the difference in elevation. You could either pump water directly to the gardens and run around real fast from plant to plant so the water won’t flow where you don’t want it before it soaks in; or you could put a few barrels near each garden spot, preferably elevated, and initially transfer water to them so you can then water at a more leisurely pace later on, using just gravity. You’ll need covers for the barrels to keep the leaves and mosquitoes. You’ll have to follow the weather forecasts and remove the covers appropriately, or else rig up some kind of screen system out

Are you thinking about buying a duvet cover or fabric for making duvet covers? Well before you fall prey of unscrupulous sales reps roaming the net, take a few minutes to read this review. I will make an attempt to help steer you towards the right direction with no ulterior motives.

If you want to buy quality, then you better be ready to part with some serious cash. This is because duvet covers are very expensive. These days it is quite difficult to find a good quality one at below $100.

Considering the fact that they are used to protect a comforter, which is very expensive to maintain then it becomes easy to understand why they are so expensive.

Having said all that, now I will provide you with some recommendations on where you can find quality Japanese duvet coverany other type that you prefer.

The first place to start is at a retailer that sells over stocked items like Overstock.com. From there you can find tons of options at highly affordable prices. Keep in mind that these stores don’t necessarily sell poor or second grade quality: they sell quality that couldn’t be sold on time hence the reduction in price.

Ebay does have some descent offerings you can choose from|You can also try out auction sites like Ebay. This site is very popular and you can find what you are looking for, from black duvet covers, beige, green, yellow, red, pink duvet covers. Just try to avoid buying from someone who smokes to avoid receiving “smokey” goods. The best way to do this is to make sure you buy from a seller who has the “new in package” seal .

There are other retailers you can try out. These include Khol’s department stores and Urban Outfitters. Just find the discount bin and you may just land on something costing about $20. You can also check out Ikea, Amazon.com and Target or a duvet cover review website like aboutduvetcovers.com

Until yesterday, we could hear the water filling the toilet tank after a flush. Now it takes a minute or more for it to kick on. Before we start dumping CLR in, can anyone tell me what part may be defective/clogged? I would rather know whats going on than just pour a solution and pray.

Answer:
Sounds like your float is hanging up on something. uncover the tank and flush it, your float(The big ball on the wire rod) should start falling with the water, thus opening the valve to start refilling, if not it is hanging up on something. If it does fall as fast as the water level and the water does not start refilling, then your valve inside the toilet needs to be replaced. Any hardware store carries them about $15 and they come with instructions, not a hard fix.

Do egg shells and coffee grounds add nutrients to soil for roses?

Answer:
As I have come to understand it: Crushed eggshells do several things. They deter snails, add grit, and decompose to support the bloom (phosphorus/phospheresence) Coffee grounds = nitrogen (support leaf growth) * too much, too close, may cause nitrogen burn Banana peels= potassium (support root growth) Hence, The “NPK” formula (You may see this on bags of commercial fertilizer) N, nitrogen; P, phosphorus;K, potassium (periodic table of elements). Companion planting garlic with roses commands the title of a book, (Roses love Garlic) and are said to enhance their fragrance. In Joy!
