im trying to install my dance pole, here’s my situation: i previously tried getting a friend to drill through my concrete ceiling with a regular drill (before i knew hammer drills can only do the trick) and twisted drill bit. he had gotten 1/3 inside the hole and said that he had “hit” something that seemed to be metal because it was sparking. i had witnessed the drilling – it didnt seem to be an electric socket or anything harmful. there are no light fixures in my living room btw. but be it concrete or metal im guessing a standard drill would cause some sparking if its forced hard enough and he was using all of his strength. im not sure if it was concrete or a beam. ive heard that stud finders won’t do much justice but any info helps on this debate. i just bought a hammer drill (www.amazon.com/1-2-Impact-Hammer-Drill/… i wonder if this will do the trick. im going to attempt to drill in the same hole. 1) how can i determine if it is a metal beam or concrete? should i try to drill in the same hole? 2) concrete/masonry bits are for hammer drills, but the pole came with a standard twisted drill bit (guessing regular plastered ceilings are most common) should i use it for the hammer drill anyway? 3) should i invest in a stud finder? is it needed in the case of concrete? 4) did i drill a beam or is it concrete that needs to be drilled with a hammer drill? im not completely null to this, but please use basic terminology! or at least to where i can use wikipedia lol :p please do not judge me, if you have negative things to say dont say them at all, thank you! 2 hours ago – 4 days left to answer. No. The speeds are determined by the number of “poles” in the motor. In your motor, there are 4 coils, each with a different number of poles. What you do with the switch is select one of the four sets of poles. Sorry, the coils inside can not be modified to change the number of poles without destroying the integrity of the coils. Think of a 3 position light, where you selectively energize with a low position, medium position and then a bright position. Most fan motors are fixed in the exact same manner as the 3 level light bulb. SOME, have a variable speed control that mounts where the wall switch would be to turn the fan on and off. Your best bet is to shop around for a replacement, preferably one with a variable speed control which works exactly like a lamp dimmer does, continuously variable from almost a full stop to whatever. I recently replaced one similar to yours with another fan, with separate speed and dimmer controls for the motor and lights. And yes, it DID cost a few dollars more, but now that I am using it, I do not know how I tolerated the old clunker I had before…
